Just Write {7}

It's Tuesday again.

A rainy, cold Tuesday.

God, I hate Tuesdays.

2014 is proving to be an odd year.

Feeling a little in limbo, disoriented by the date and the weather, and work.

I'm definitely not back in the groove, after my break, and we're all kind of plodding through the days, even the kids.

H and E and I are running away together for the long weekend, and I have aspirations of sitting in a hotel room and watching shitty TV for half the day and swimming in a pool for the other half.

Lofty goals, I know, but I think we can make them happen.

Maybe I'll even be holding a glass of wine for part of the weekend.

NaNoWriMo 2010: Week 3 Update

I am procrastinating writing tonight by writing a post about my writing this week.

How meta of me.

Actually, I've gotten into a bit of a weird schedule this week, starting my writing at or around 10:30 PM and furiously writing for an hour, just staring at the increasing word count.

When November 30 comes, I hope this daily procrastination subsides, so that it is not a mad rush to midnight. I've never been a procrastinator, so this all feels kind of strange.

I almost didn't write at all Thursday night, after drinking most of a bottle of red wine between the hours of 6:30 and 9 and watching Thursday night NBC shows, but then I made myself. Wrote through the commercials of The Office, the end of Grey's Anatomy, and Private Practice.

I woke up with a hangover on Friday morning (the morning of a phone interview, oops), so I'm sure the 1667 words I wrote while inebriated aren't my finest. Haven't taken the time to revisit what they were yet.

I'm sure that will be good for a laugh.

Aside from that, this week wasn't as hard as last week, but I know for sure now that this novel isn't good.

I write and think about all the revisions I will have to do to make it more than an indulgent psychoanalytical fest. (I may as well call the book, Exorcising My Demons, but I won't.)

In fact, I have a couple titles in mind: one is A Girl, Unguarded and the other is Bright and Gray. We'll see if either sticks.

Current word count: 33,467 (should be past 35,000 by tonight...at some point).

Update: It took me three hours, but I ended up at 35,043.

There are just ENDLESS ways to distract myself on Facebook, dammit.

Summer Job, 2nd edition, vol. XIV (Movin' Out)

My bags are packed. I'm ready to go.
I'm standing here...

Just kidding.

But, really. My bags are packed. (Someone should write a scientific equation that involves < and > signs about the difference in time it takes to pack FOR a trip than FROM a trip.)

This week was definitely the most intense of the summer in terms of work.

Not only were we organizing final projects and final evaluations and closing out all our books and making sure everything was copied and in order, but we had to move out of our offices.

Friday alone involved morning observations, afternoon meetings, running Drama Cafe until dinner, working at the Main Event and roaming until 11 and then roaming part of the overnight shift until 1 AM.

Saturday was spent doing data entry until noon and then packing and organizing about 100 boxes of course supplies until 3:30.

Then, last night, I spent three hours eating and NOT drinking at the staff dinner and four hours DRINKING (straight from a Prosecco bottle because I'm classy like that) and dancing at the after party.

Then I ran to a 24-hour store for popcorn and candy and Vitamin Water and passed out around 2:30 AM. Woke up every hour from 6:30 til 9:30, then got up because I figured I was probably missing something important.

I'm heading out to brunch soon with two of my colleagues. Checking out first, which freaks me out. Then, waiting around to watch everyone leave until around 2 PM when I'll catch my own ride.

Home by 5 PM, if all goes well.

And totally in denial about it all.

Tourist Tips for a Weekend in Chicago

1. If possible, stay in a hotel that is close to public transportation. This will make exploring this gorgeous, easily-accessible city even easier.
1a. Do not discount a hotel simply because it does not have a bar. Friendly staff, comfortable beds, free breakfast buffet, and a waffle maker nearly make up for this lack.
1b. In terms of riding the "L," REALLY stay clear of the doors. They can eat you.
1c. The gong sound you hear on the train is not some nearby church bell tolling the time. That lovely sound is the "L" indicating that the doors are about to eat you.

2. If you have a chance to see Sex and the City 2, don't.
2a. Even the two glasses of Prosecco you order at the fancy movie theatre will not make the movie any less offensive or depressingly unamusing.

3. If you notice a waitress sneaking around the alleyway after you’ve just ordered two beers at an outdoor bar, she may, in fact, be spontaneously quitting. Don’t worry though, another waitress is sure to be with you shortly.

4. Be warned: The crispy red snapper they serve at Sushi Samba Rio comes with a face.

5. Walking through Millennium Park and by the water is an ideal activity for any sunny day.
5a. Remember to wear sensible shoes.
5b. Don’t be afraid to ask other tourists to photograph you and your friends. But also, don’t wait around for twenty minutes, searching for the EXACT right person to take your picture. Any schmoe will do.

6. See a play at the Steppenwolf Theatre.

7. Sometimes, when you THINK the perfect snack would be either a Chicago-style hotdog or a slice of deep-dish pizza, the ACTUAL perfect snack is Chicago-mix popcorn from Garrett's: cheddar popcorn and caramel popcorn made separately and mixed into cheesy, sweet perfection.
7a. Eat in the park, if possible. While playing I Spy, if you can manage it.

8. The rooftop bar at The Wit Hotel is a scene. Enter at your own risk. However, drinks and snacks there are excellent.
8a. Avoid groups of sleazy, European men, unless they offer to share their champagne with you. In which case, have at it.

9. A late night supper at Park Grille is a superb way to end a really long, hot, eventful day. I recommend you order the crab cake and the house salad.

10. Sharing buffalo wings and a vegi deep-dish pizza is a good way to feel better about yourself after having a fat day while shopping. Especially if you’ve been looking for a birthday party dress and everything you tried on made you feel gross.

11. The Architectural Boat Tour is worth the price and will provide you with a deeper appreciation of the buildings that have surrounded you all weekend. And free cookies.

12. Be aware: The Sears Tower is now called the Willis Tower.
12a. Go to the Sky Deck. It’s super fun and educational.
12b. Standing 103 floors above Chicago actually makes you feel high. As in, not sober.

13. The walk to Tamarind on Wabash Avenue is sketchy. Take a cab.
13a. And keep the "L" tracks over you as a guide, otherwise you'll be confused as to how you ended up on this street instead of that one.

14. Take the bus to the Museum of Science and Industry. Not only will you be excited that you’re using public transportation so expertly but you will get a nice tour of the outskirts of the city.
14a. Here, you can enjoy such exciting exhibits as touring the U505 submarine, or seeing the development of a human fetus week by week, or attend a special lecture called “Poop Happens,” or watch as a 13-foot heart matches your very own pulse.
14b. Try not to go on a day the President is visiting or when it’s spontaneously pouring.
14c. And, by all means, check your departing flight status before you get back on the bus to return to the city. You can spend a whole day there, and it’s more fun than sitting in an airport for five hours.

15. Remember, the remedy for avoiding a nasty hangover often involves a long walk back to the hotel.
15a. Be sure to buy SmartWater and/or Vitamin Water on the way to stave off dehydration. Sometimes Pretzel M&Ms are appropriate as well.
15b. The mimosa bar and hangover helper (virtually nachos covered in eggs) at Sweetwater on Michigan Avenue also help.

Safe travels!

Important Decisions Before a Graduation Party

me: i was gonna get a six-pack of corona
and a bottle of champagne but that will be awkward too carry
S: anything is going to be awkward to carry
cuz it'll be heavy and liquid filled
me: but a six pack is more awkward than another bottle of something
S: true
me: but i don't know what else to bring
maybe TWO bottles of champagne
hahahaha
S: yeah!
or maybe... champagne and orange juice?
what time is the thing?
me: 6
S: or champagne and a bottle of tequila?
me: i just won't drink the tequlia
but i can provide it for others
S: will other people drink it?
me: i dunno
S: tequila and limes
final answer
me: where does one get limes?
S: or corona
me: i'm going to one place
well corona is where i started!
but i can't carry it
with my overnight stuff and my purse
S: champagne and cookies!
brownies
pot brownies

Yes, because the average liquor store sells champagne, tequila, limes, brownie mix, eggs, oil, and marijuana.

UPDATE: Naturally, I purchased two bottles of Prosecco.
